“The problem was really,” writes Madeleine
L’Engle, “that I put two things first. My husband and children came first. So did
my writing. Bump.” Bump. Bump. Bump. Writing moms live with constantly having to
put their children and their writing first. Bump. Wisps of Time gives writers
the tools to navigate the wondrous, treacherous life of the mother who writes.
We grab “wisps of time” for everything, a load of laundry here, a paragraph there,
a dinner made here, a query letter sent there. Wisps of Time, the workshop,
provides writers with practical, inspirational ideas and tools to better use the
wisps of time we grab for everything we do.
“We don’t fit anywhere,” one writing mom and friend mused aloud to me one day, “moms
who stay home don’t understand why we can’t have coffee with them and moms who leave
to work outside the home don’t think we have a profession. The only people who really
get us are other writing moms.”
The decision to blend being a mother and managing a home with the commitment to write
can leave a writer feeling like a hamster stuck on the spinning wheel in her cage,
constantly moving and never feeling as if she actually accomplishes any forward direction.
It is a juggling act to constantly work toward honing one’s craft, toward publication
while still managing to stay, somewhat, on top of the groceries, cooking, laundry,
homework, stories, bedtimes, and endless other responsibilities that go along with
managing a home and a family.
Wisps of Time is designed for writers who feel the tug of being a mom committed
to her children and a writer committed to her craft. Writers will leave this workshop
with practical ideas toward managing the household and inspirational ideas
to better her craft. We can do both. We can do both well, extraordinarily
well actually, with the right tools.
Wisps of Time provides writing moms with the essential tools for this challenging
and cherished time in a writer’s life. |
